Digital Marketing for Founders

Budget was not the variable. Clarity of message was.

The business case

A Video That Cost Four Thousand Dollars — Michael Dubin, Dollar Shave Club · United States · 2012. Dollar Shave Club was entering a category dominated by companies with enormous advertising budgets and decades of shelf presence. It could not outspend them and did not try.

Why it matters

Budget was not the variable. Clarity of message was. Their competitors had more money, better distribution and stronger brand recognition. What they did not have was a message that named the customer's irritation out loud. For a founder with almost no budget, this is the most important finding in modern marketing: attention is not purchased in the first instance, it is earned by saying something true that nobody else is willing to say plainly. Paid distribution amplifies a message that already works. It cannot rescue one that does not.
