Its founders noticed that people constantly needed one piece of software to talk to another, and that building each connection individually was tedious and repetitive.
Why it matters
Automation is written-down process, executed by software. The reason Zapier is instructive is not the product. It is that a company selling automation had to first become disciplined about documenting its own work. You cannot automate a process you have never written down, because automation requires you to state exactly what happens, in what order, under which conditions. This is why the manual-first rule from Chapter 1 matters. Do it by hand, write down what you did, then automate the written version.
