Product-Market Fit

Product-market fit is measurable, and therefore improvable.

The business case

Turning a Feeling Into a Number — Rahul Vohra, Superhuman · United States · from 2017. Product-market fit was, for years, described almost mystically. Founders were told they would simply know when they had it, which is unhelpful advice for anyone who does not.

Why it matters

Product-market fit is measurable, and therefore improvable. The important move was not the number itself. It was converting an unmeasurable feeling into a metric that could be tracked over time. Once measurable, fit becomes a project with a method rather than a mystery you wait for. Note also what Vohra did with the users who were not disappointed: he largely ignored them. Trying to satisfy everyone is the most reliable way to be essential to nobody.
