A Shopping Trolley in Five Days — IDEO, filmed by ABC Nightline · United States · 1999. The design firm IDEO agreed to be filmed redesigning an everyday object under an extreme constraint: a shopping trolley, from brief to working prototype, in five days.
Why it matters
They stopped arguing and started building. The five-day constraint removed the possibility of perfectionism. Nobody could defend an opinion for long, because a rough physical model could settle the question in an afternoon. Crude prototypes have a second advantage that polished ones lack: people criticise them honestly. A rough model invites suggestions, while a polished one invites politeness. That is why you should show customers something that obviously took two hours rather than something that obviously took two months.
