The Opportunity Creator Mindset

He did not have a better idea. He had a better habit of noticing.

The business case

5,127 Prototypes — James Dyson · United Kingdom · 1979–1993. In 1978 James Dyson was using a vacuum cleaner at home and noticed it lost suction as the bag filled. Everyone he knew had experienced this. Nobody treated it as a problem — it was simply how vacuum cleaners were.

Why it matters

He did not have a better idea. He had a better habit of noticing. Millions of people used the same vacuum cleaners and felt the same frustration. Dyson's advantage was not intelligence, capital or connections — he had none of the three when he started. His advantage was that he refused to accept a frustration as normal, and he was willing to be wrong 5,126 times on the way to being right once. That combination — noticing what others have normalised, then iterating past failure — is what this chapter trains.
